Comprehensive Spine Surgery, Built Around You

For most patients, spine surgery is something they hope to avoid. When conservative care has not provided lasting relief, the next step deserves a careful, second-opinion-quality evaluation by surgeons who specialize in the latest minimally invasive techniques. That is what NASPI offers.

Practice co-founder and CEO Dr. Daniel M. Dorri built NASPI to deliver comprehensive spine care from diagnosis through surgical treatment, all under one roof. With a growing team of board-certified spine specialists including Dr. Christopher J. Bilbao, NASPI offers the full range of modern spine surgery options across our locations in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Whether you are facing your first spine surgery, looking for a second opinion, or considering a revision of a prior procedure, NASPI's team will give you a clear, honest assessment and recommend the approach most likely to genuinely help. Surgery is only recommended when it offers the best path forward for your specific condition.

Spine Surgery FAQs

Common questions about choosing a spine surgeon, what to expect, and how NASPI approaches spine care.

How do I know if I need spine surgery?

Most spine conditions improve without surgery. Surgery is typically considered after at least 6 to 12 weeks of conservative treatment (physical therapy, medications, injections) has not provided adequate relief, when imaging confirms a clear surgical target, or when neurological symptoms like weakness or numbness are progressing. A consultation with a board-certified spine surgeon is the best way to determine whether surgery is appropriate for your specific condition.

What is the difference between minimally invasive and traditional spine surgery?

Traditional open spine surgery uses larger incisions, retracts back muscles widely, and may remove significant bone to access the spine. Minimally invasive techniques use smaller incisions, tubular retractors, and surgical microscopes or endoscopes to access the same anatomy with less muscle disruption. Results include less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. NASPI's surgeons use minimally invasive techniques whenever they are appropriate for the condition.

What should I bring to my spine surgery consultation?

Bring your most recent MRI or CT imaging (digital copy is ideal), reports from any prior imaging or procedures, a list of treatments you have tried (physical therapy, medications, injections), prior operative reports if you have had spine surgery before, and a list of current medications. Insurance information will also be needed. Coming prepared makes your consultation much more productive.

How do I get a second opinion at NASPI?

NASPI welcomes second-opinion consultations. Many of our patients come to us after evaluations or surgeries elsewhere. Schedule a consultation by calling (844) 666-2774 or contacting us online. Bring all prior imaging and records to your appointment for the most thorough evaluation.

Does NASPI accept my insurance?

NASPI is in-network with most major insurance plans. Our team will verify your specific benefits and explain coverage before scheduling any procedure. Pre-authorization is typically required for surgical procedures and we handle that process for you. Contact our office for specific insurance questions.

How long does spine surgery recovery take?

Recovery time varies significantly by procedure. Outpatient procedures like microdiscectomy or endoscopic discectomy may have return to desk work in 1 to 2 weeks. Fusion procedures typically require 4 to 8 weeks before returning to work, with bone healing continuing for 3 to 6 months. Your surgeon will provide a personalized recovery timeline based on your specific procedure and individual factors.

Where will my surgery be performed?

NASPI surgeons perform procedures at affiliated hospital partners and ambulatory surgical centers across our service area. The specific facility depends on the type of procedure, with outpatient procedures often performed at surgical centers and complex procedures (fusion, revision, robotic-assisted) typically performed at hospital partners. Your surgeon will discuss the specific facility during your consultation.

What if I need a procedure NASPI doesn't perform?

NASPI offers a comprehensive range of spine surgery procedures, but in rare cases involving very specialized conditions, we may refer to a specific subspecialty center. We will give you an honest assessment of whether your case is best treated at NASPI or whether a specialized referral is in your best interest.
